The Quest for the Mythical Fountain of Youth

In the last 100 years, improvements in medical technology have had enormous impact on life expectancies. In America, life expectancy has gone from 47 years in 1900 to 78 years today. Although life expectancy has improved, the maximum human life span of 125 years has not and very few of us make it to the century mark.

Unlike humans, some animals constantly generate telomerase. Lobsters, for example, are considered essentially immortal. Their telomeres never shorten. Some animals kept as pets have approached and even surpassed the century mark.

Even in wild animals such as whales, evidence has mounted that their life spans are longer than previously thought. For example, a whale was discovered with a 130-year-old harpoon point in its neck. Since whalers generally did not take calves, it must have already been at least a few years old at the time it was harpooned.

In humans, the only healthy cells that do not age are reproductive cells. Since the telomerase gene is switched "on," telomeres do not shorten when the cells multiply.

Occasionally, the telomerase gene in regular adult cells turns on, resulting in a rejuvenated cell. Scientists have used gamma radiation to switch on the telomerase gene in cell cultures, and some speculate that natural gamma may trigger such events in living organisms.

If we could somehow lengthen the telomeres in all of our cells, we could theoretically greatly increase human life span. Perhaps more importantly, we would be healthier at advanced ages, because excessively shortened telomeres result in cell malfunctions.

When you walk down that golden aisle of oils in your local store, have you ever been confused about what kind of oil you should buy? Have you ever wondered, 'what's the difference between all these oils?'

A short answer and a long answer

Simple answer: the cheap ones are nasty and don't support healthy aging! Longer answer, read on. You need to know that the seeds that are used to make oils, are mostly from the family of polyunsaturated seeds, which are really good for you. As you age they become even more important, but there is a catch - they need to be undamaged.

What's so important about categorizing fats?

Polyunsaturated fats are grouped into two different types, namely Omega 6 and Omega 3 fats. And oil manufacturers prefer to use the Omega 6 variety to produce cheap oil because they are derived from summer seed crops. However, you also need to know that these polyunsaturated seeds don't like to be exposed to light, heat or oxygen, as they become damaged when they are exposed to these elements. Polyunsaturated fats are also called Essential Fatty Acids, because they have to be obtained through your diet - your body can't make them!

How is oil extracted from seeds?

The Omega 6 containing sunflower, safflower, canola, soya and corn seeds are used to make shelf stable oils. A process called 'solvent extraction' is employed, which involves petro-chemical by-products, such as hexane or trichloroethylene, being used to suck the oil from the seeds, after crushing them. We know that these solvents are carcinogens.

Separating the solvent and the oil involves heating the oil up to about 150 degrees C or 302 degrees F, allowing the solvent to evaporate. De-gumming follows, which removes all the nutrients from the oil, as these nutrients would cause the oil to go rancid on the shelf. This process again involves heating the oil up to 60 degrees C or 140 degrees F.

Then comes refining and bleaching, which involves the use of harsh chemicals, such as sodium hydroxide and phosphoric acid as well as high temperatures, and these processes result in further damage to the fat molecules. Deodorization follows which involves heating the oil up to 270 degrees C, or 518 degrees F. Temperatures above 160 degrees C cause the formation of trans fats, with higher temperatures causing substantial increases in their formation.

Finally we are left with a product that is tasteless and nutritionally-dead, BUT shelf stable and cheap!

When this oil gets to the shelf it is completely destroyed. Every tablespoon of damaged oil contains 100 000 000 toxic molecules for every one of your cells, because these polyunsaturated fat molecules don't like light, heat and oxygen!

And when you take it home, and heat it again, you are simply increasing the damage. And of course this doesn't support your aging body, or brain.

The Secret to Health and Fitness After 40

Have you noticed that when you hit your late 30's or if you we lucky your 40's you suddenly seem to have gained some extra weight (and it appeared magically overnight ), you're not as active as you used to be and you start to feel a lot more aches and pains than you used too?

Is this the way it is with aging do we just need to accept this and continue to go downhill?

NO we tell ourselves; I'm going to fix this and get back into shape and lose that extra weight.

But it doesn't seem to happen for us - Why? And how do we overcome it? Is becoming Fit after 40 just a myth?

So why doesn't it happen? Well often the first thing we notice is that in our 30's and 40's we have a lot on, it is likely you have a job and a family and other commitments to deal with, and after dealing with all of these there is no time left to look after ourselves and if there is time we are just too darn tired.

So what's the secret to balancing our life with trying to get back to the way you used to feel and becoming Fit and Healthy at 40?

The Number one secret is to find some time.

This is not as hard as it sounds, stop listening to that little voice in your head saying there's no time or you are too tired. This is the trap that started it all, you will need to push yourself a little to get started, but to help motivate yourself into action, think about why you want to improve your health and fitness and what are the consequences if you don't, and most importantly don't do it for anyone else other than yourself, trying to get fit and healthy because someone else told you that you need too will not motivate you in the long term.

Where to find time:

Get out of bed earlier - Getting up and doing something in the morning helps start your day out on the right foot, you will give your metabolism a boost for the entire day!! (Burning more of those extra pounds off each day) you might think I need my sleep, well there are two ways to approach this 1. Stop watching the idiot box (Television) at night and go to bed earlier at least a couple of days a week. 2. One thing that surprises most people who start getting up earlier each day is that you don't actually need that extra 30-60 minutes of sleep, by getting more active your quality of sleep will improve, and so you will not need as much sleep, you may find that you are going to bed the same time, if not later, and getting up earlier and feel better than when you used to struggle to get out of bed.

Consciously plan some time - If you have sat down and worked out exactly what you do every minute of the day you will find that there is a lot of idle time in your day where the things you are doing are not really achieving anything, if you consciously plan some time to do something active or work towards you 'fit after 40' health and fitness goals, you will find it. We all have developed a habit of procrastinating, making excuses why we don't just go and do something we know we need to do, but once you actually decide to make the time you will find it does not impact on anything else in your life, or if it does you only drop things that were not achieving anything anyway.

Fit something into your normal routine - this is a bit of a cheat really, it's about looking for opportunities within your daily activities that you can change slightly to work towards improving your health and fitness.

Some ideas to try:

Take stairs instead of an elevator,
Choose a car park a bit further away from where you need to be and walk the rest
Eat some fruit or nuts instead of junk food if you need to snack during the day
Sit up straighter in you chair, tighten and relax your abdominal muscles to improve your posture (leads to less soreness/stiffness which means you can do more later in the day)
Take your lunch to work
Don't eat 'on the fly' take the time to eat something properly, look at what your are eating, you don't have to give up all of the foods you like but be aware of what you are eating, when you are eating it and how much you are eating.
Stand up and stretch or go for a around the office especially if you have a desk job.
Drink more water - Notice I didn't say drink less coffee or other drinks, these other drinks might be good or bad for you, and I am not here to tell you what you can and can't drink, but drinking some extra water during the day will offset most negative effects of other beverages (unless you are consuming large quantities of something and large amounts of most things will usually cause problems - even too much water can be bad)

The reason we get into this trap and don't see this simple secret to get fit after 40, is because we have become too caught up with what we have been doing every day for the last 10-20 years, it's become a habit to squeeze everything else in to our day and forget about what we need to maintain a healthy body. There really is no difference between being Fit at 40 to being Fit at 20 or 30, it's just the conscious effort we put into it, you may need to make up for what you have been doing to yourself for the last 20 years, but it won't take long and you'll be back to where you were in your 30's and you can make the choice to become a health & fitness freak or just stay at a point where you are not tired all of the time and be able to get out and do the things you want to do each day.

It is no secret that changes in hormone levels are associated with the appearance of the effects of aging in the entire body. The physical signs of aging are the most obvious manifestations of declining hormone levels. At middle age, many people experience dramatic changes in the elasticity and thickness of the skin. Beginning at age thirty, the levels of HGH fall about 14 percent per decade so that by age sixty, the amount of HGH produced within twenty-four hours is reduced by half. In terms of numerical values, the body produces about 500 micrograms of HGH daily at age twenty, 200 micrograms at age forty and 25 micrograms at age eighty.?

The reason why HGH declines with age remains unexplained by scientists. It was believed that the pituitary gland, which produces HGH, requires adequate stimulation to produce the hormone. This means that the problem must lie on the factors that affect the release of the hormone. The decline in HGH levels was associated with the increasing levels of somatostatin, an HGH inhibitor. It was found that the levels of somatostatin increase with age and block the release of HGH. Some researchers believe that the precursor hormone is responsible for the decline in HGH levels. The growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) is the precursor for HGH, but this hormone becomes less sensitive to feedbacks as we age.
